The 2024 AASHTO Safety Summit and Peer Exchange will again bring together state DOT leaders, management, and practitioners, as well as transportation professionals in the public, private, non-profit, and academic sectors, to share notable examples of programs, policies, and projects that incorporate safety for all road users throughout the roadway lifecycle and agency activities.
The objectives of the summit are to report on national, state, and AASHTO safety initiatives; continue joint executive, managerial, and practitioner conversations on notable safety practices; highlight application of new resources; and continue collaboration across the roadway lifecycle, throughout state DOTs, and with partner stakeholders.
In collaboration with other AASHTO committees and external partner organizations, the Committee on Safety will host 2.5 days of sessions designed to maximize sharing state and partner experiences. Interactive sessions will allow participants to share the successes and challenges they have experienced and to learn ways others have been working on the same issues. Conversations on the first day will be organized around topics including, polices, operations, post-crash care, programming, communications, road users, employee safety, and speed management. The remaining 1.5 days of the event will also use peer exchange conversations to focus in more detail on these topics and to address additional issues such as the safe system approach, intersection and roadway departure crashes, opportunities for using of artificial intelligence for safety across the roadway lifecycle, evolving design and speed management practices, tort liability, maintenance of safety features, and the Highway Safety Manual.
